Frequently Asked Questions
What is a CSA?
A CSA farm share provides the shareholder with 20 weeks of fresh, locally grown produce. The share has a wide variety of items, including many seasonal favorites and we guarantee you will try a few new things as a member. The weekly share varies in variety and abundance based on the season. For example, shares are typically lighter early in the season but become more bountiful as the season progresses. We do our best to provide a diverse variety from week to week.
Why should my family join a CSA?
CSA Memberships are the backbone to our small farm's season each year. By becoming a member of our CSA program early, you directly help us purchase seeds, potting soil, soil amendments, gas for the tractors and hire the help that puts the food on your table during the season!
What is included in the CSA box?
The growing season provides ample possibilities in terms of produce and products you may find in the variety CSA boxes that we offer. Assorted herbs and vegetables like asparagus, onions, lettuce, carrots, kale, radish, potatoes, cauliflower, scallions, peppers, broccoli, leeks, mushrooms, summer squash, cucumbers, and beets as well as fruit like strawberries, blackberries, melons, hardy kiwi, pawpaw, and much more. In the Culinary Reserve CSA box you will also receive items we make like maple syrup, fresh and dried pasta, corn grits, vinegars, preserved vegetables and more.
That sounds good, but I don't know when each item is in season. What are some example shares based on seasonality?
Here are some sample weeks shares!
July: lettuce head, 1 bunch swiss chard, 1 fresh garlic or 1 bunch scallions, 2 lbs. summer squash, 1 bunch basil or 1 bunch dill, 3 cucumbers, 2 lbs. potatoes
September: lettuce head or bunch swiss chard, 3 peppers and/or eggplant, 3 lbs. tomatoes, 1 bunch basil or 1 bunch parsley, 1 bulb garlic or 2 sweet onions, 2 lbs. green beans, 1 fennel or 1 celery
October: lettuce head, bok choi or bunch arugula, 1 bunch kale, 1 bunch beets or carrots, 1 head broccoli or cauliflower, 1 bunch kohlrabi or head cabbage, 2 lbs. sweet potatoes, 1 bunch turnips or radishes
When is the CSA growing season?
Our CSA season begins in late-May and ends Mid-October
What are your growing practices?
We grow our vegetables using Organic Practices as laid out by the USDA. Our goal is to provide healthy, delicious food, while building our soil health and bio-diversity. This means we use a wide array of conservation faming practices, including cover crops, minimal tillage, crop rotation, and high tunnels. We never use chemical fertilizers or pesticides on our farm.
When and where can I pick up my weekly share?
2022 CSA Pickups will be available Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays at our
Roadside Market located at 3501 Princeton Pike, Lawrenceville NJ, just a short (8 minute) drive from downtown Princeton!
What happens if I am unable to pick up my share?
If for whatever reason you are unable to pick up your share, you may have a family member or friend pick up the share for you.
Are there any reminders sent out about picking up our shares?
Reminders are sent 1-2 days before your share pick-up date. These reminders also include a description of what you’ll find in your box for that week, along with some enticing recipes that showcase the items in your box.
What is the best way to get in touch with Great Meadow if we have questions about our share or the items in our boxes?
